We get asked this all the time: “Do I need a sweeper or a scrubber?” People often use the terms interchangeably, but they do completely different jobs. If you book the wrong machine for your factory or warehouse, you’re going to be disappointed with the result.
Sweeping: The First Line of Defence
Think of an industrial sweeper as a massive, powerful broom and dustpan combined with a vacuum. Sweepers use rotating brushes to flick loose debris — dust, dirt, gravel, leaves, pallet splinters, and rubbish — into a hopper.
If your floor is covered in loose, dry material, a sweeper is exactly what you need. It clears the bulk of the mess quickly and efficiently. But here’s the catch: a sweeper will not remove anything that is stuck, spilt, or stained into the concrete.
Scrubbing: The Deep Clean
This is where mechanical scrubbing comes in. A ride-on scrubber puts down water and industrial cleaning chemicals, uses heavy rotating pads to aggressively scrub the floor, and then vacuums the dirty water back up in one pass, leaving the floor dry and safe.
You need a scrubber when you’re dealing with:
- Oil spills and hydraulic fluid leaks
- Tyre marks from forklifts
- Ingrained dirt and grime that a broom won’t shift
- Sticky residue from manufacturing processes
- End-of-lease make-goods where the floor needs to look near-new
The Two-Step Approach
If your floor is filthy, you can’t just run a scrubber over it. If you try to scrub a floor covered in loose dirt and pallet wrap, you’ll just push wet mud around and block the scrubber’s squeegee.
For a proper deep clean, it’s a two-step process: sweep first to remove the loose debris, then scrub to lift the stains and grime. That’s why we often bring both machines to a site, or use combination sweeper-scrubbers for large warehouse jobs.
